Washington, Sep 21, 2009 -

Congressman George Radanovich (R-Mariposa) today released the following statement after Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman, Julius Genachowski announced his intent of Proposed Rulemaking that could significantly expand the federal governments reach into the operation of the Internet.

“One of the internet’s most valuable qualities is that it has always been open and free from government intervention, which has driven innovation, created new opportunities and jobs, and guided the internet into the great success it is today.  I agree with Chairman Genachowski that the open internet is an integral component to the future of health care delivery, reducing energy consumption and enhancing the education of all Americans.

“I am very concerned, however, with any effort to insert the heavy hand of the government in an area void of its necessity.  For years I have said that net neutrality is a solution in search of a problem.  Now the Chairman is proposing to expand government control to the wireless industry—perhaps the most competitive of our telecommunications industries and in least need of government interference.

“Industry wide regulations that effectively give the FCC the final say over business models, particularly in the absence of a demonstrable problem, will only serve to stifle the creativity and investment necessary to ensure the internet continues to grow and drive our communications sector and the economy as a whole.

“I appreciate the Chairman’s concern about transparency and competition, and I believe that the fact-based evidence and comments from any rulemaking in this area will show that such regulation is unnecessary.  I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues, the FCC, and affected stakeholders on promoting an internet that reflects that evidence and remains the model of successful competition it is today.”
